SLA’s Best Kept Secrets: The Contributed Papers Sessions
SLA is now accepting proposals for Contributed Papers to be presented at the 2012 Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO to be held 15-18 July 2012 in Chicago.
• Do ontologies, taxonomies and semantics make your tail wag?
• Are mobile devices your passion?
• Is social media your thing?
• Are you the Content Wrangler for your organization?
In this era of a world economy, things are more interdependent than ever. Changes in one arena impact another, borders are blurring, and expectations are higher than ever. Technology is driving change forward at a dramatic speed, and what was impossible three years ago is now commonplace.

The Contributed Papers Sessions allow you to showcase your creative and innovative solutions to some of today’s pressing information issues. Share your successes with your colleagues and inspire your peers. We are particularly interested in hearing from our international members.

Topics for papers must be related to the conference theme of “Practicing Agility in an Open World Economy” and should focus on putting ideas into practice: don’t just think, ACT.

Every SLA member is encouraged to submit an abstract! Proposals will be evaluated by a panel of SLA members in a blind review and the strongest will be selected for development into full papers.

Requirements for Acceptance

Topics should be related to library or information science, information management, research, client services, technology or administration in special libraries. Proposals will be judged on their relevance to the conference theme “Practicing Agility in an Open World Economy.” Reviewers will be looking for novelty, creativity, scholarship, and applicability to an author-defined audience.

Proposed papers must also meet these requirements:
• At least one author is a member of SLA
• At least one author commits to presenting the paper at the Annual Conference
• The proposal is received by December 12, 2011 deadline
• The paper has not been published in or submitted to any other publication or conference planning group
• The author (and any co-authors) must be willing to sign a copyright assignment form that will permit SLA to use the paper in various formats
Deadlines

12 December 2011 – Proposals due. Submit an abstract of your paper via e-mail to Helen Losch at helenlosch@gmail.com. Abstracts should be between 250-300 words in length, or roughly one page in 12-point text. Please also identify your core audience (e.g. academic, web).

01 February 2012 – Notification. All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision, and the strongest proposals will be invited to develop them into full papers.

01 June 2012 – Papers due. Authors submit their completed papers and copyright assignments to SLA.

15-18 July 2012 – Conference presentation. Authors will delivery a 15-minute presentation of their papers. Presentation should focus on the practical applications of the research conducted – what is really, really, really important about their topic and results. Authors may be asked to present in the Pecha Kucha format (20 slides with 20 seconds allowed for explanation of each slide).

Open Board Position: Treasurer

Description
The Treasurer keeps the financial records for chapter, reports the current financial data at each Executive board meeting, and collects and processes attendee payments and disbursements for Chapter events.

SLA requires Chapter Treasurers to keep data and report chapter financial standings. The reporting functions for Treasurer are very important to the Chapter, and adhering to deadlines and requests for payments are critical.

Obligations
The position of Treasurer is a two year commitment. The treasurer attends Board meetings (most are conference calls) and Chapter programs, and assists with Chapter business. The term of office is two years.

The treasurer is not required to attend the SLA annual conference and/or the Leadership Summit, but all SLA volunteer chapter leaders are encouraged to do so. SLA frequently offers on-site training for Chapter Treasurers usually with other leadership training sessions on the Sunday when the annual conference begins.

Open Board Position: Vendor Relations Chair

This vital role is crucial to the continuation of quality programs and services for the chapter.

Do you have contacts with vendors? Do you enjoy promoting the activities of libraries, our chapter, and our profession? If you're ready to develop your negotiation, sales and marketing skills in a new way, this may be the position for you!

Vendor Relations Committee Chair

The Vendor Relations Committee Chair is responsible for soliciting sponsors for Chapter programs to help recover the cost of the programs; and for soliciting advertisers/sponsors for the Chapter website.

Duties:

1. Committee Chair serves on Advisory Board.
2. Contacts library supply houses, book dealers, subscription agents, microfilm service companies, consultants, online vendors and other library-related vendors to make them aware of sponsorship opportunities and Bulletin advertising possibilities. Makes follow-up phone calls to sponsors to inquire if they will sponsor Chapter programs or advertising.
3. Obtains advertising copy from vendors and sees that it is included in the correct Bulletin issues and/or program, when appropriate. Sees that the vendor receives a copy of any issue in which their ad appears.
4. Sends confirmation communications to sponsors who have agreed to sponsor programs, outlining what recognition they will receive, how much money they have agreed to contribute and information on where to send the check. Ensures that program sponsor vendors are properly credited in program literature and the Bulletin.
5. Finalizes information of correct vendor name and spelling for preliminary program, final program, brochures, signs and obtains sponsor description if needed.
6. Invoices the vendors for the ads and sponsorship commitments. Invoices should be sent with the copy of the Bulletin soon after publication or twice a year if the vendor has committed to four issues.
7. Receives payment from vendor and forwards the payments to the Chapter Treasurer. If vendors do not pay promptly, follows up with reminders or past due invoices requesting payment. Adheres to SLA Unit Fund Development Practice.
8. Maintains and updates the listing of sponsor names and contacts.

Many librarians facilitate trainings and teach classes, but few of us are formally trained to deliver information effectively in front of an audience. Feeling under-skilled as a public speaker can make librarians dread giving a talk, and feeling pressure to teach everything important in a single session can make us bombard students with too much information. Participants in this lively, hands-on class will learn how to go beyond slide software to better engage and educate an audience both during a library instruction session and after the session ends. The first half of the class will focus on public speaking skills and audience engagement strategies, with an emphasis on the structure and timing of spoken presentations. Participants will be encouraged (but not compelled) to practice these new techniques in front of the group. After a short break, the class will resume with a crash course in document design principles and processes for creating content-rich instructional materials. Participants will be seated at individual computers and will be given time to practice these document design principles by editing a template file provided by the facilitator. Upon completing this class, participants will be prepared to improve their library instruction sessions by always developing their presentations in two parts: an engaging in-class lesson and a well-designed, web-accessible document for students to learn from later.

Information scattered and disorganized can overwhelm. The same information organized can be a thing of utility and even beauty. How then do we manage "information overload"? We ignore or eliminate information at our peril. Better is an approach that seeks to organize our information and our interactions with this information in accordance with the roles we mean to fulfill in our lives and the goals we wish to achieve. This is the point of personal information management or PIM. In this course, you will learn about PIM and how it can be applied in your life. The course will include a hands-on segment during which you will identify and refine a personal unifying taxonomy (PUT). Your PUT provides a basis for "placing" and organizing the information you need to lead the live the life you want to live.
Bio: William Jones is a Research Associate Professor in the Information School at the University of Washington where he manages the Keeping Found Things Found group (kftf.ischool.washington.edu<http://kftf.ischool.washington.edu/>). He has published in the areas of personal information management (PIM), human-computer interaction, information retrieval and cognitive psychology. Prof. Jones wrote the book "Keeping Found Things Found: The Study and Practice of Personal Information Management" and also edited the book "Personal Information Management" (with co-editor Jaime Teevan). Prof. Jones received his doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon University for research into human memory.

The freely available PubMed API (application programming interface) makes it possible for programmers from outside of the National Library of Medicine to develop alternatives to PubMed.gov<http://pubmed.gov/> for searching NLM's vast database of biomedical journal literature citations. This three-hour workshop will introduce several popular and free third-party PubMed tools, comparing and contrasting them with the PubMed.gov<http://pubmed.gov/> interface. Through case studies, group exercises and hands-on practice, participants will become familiar with the strengths and limitations of search tools such as HubMed, PubGet, Novoseek, and Quertle. Knowledge Sharing Strategies and Roles

Ken Wheaton and Art Murray presented a case study of a corporate librarian’s journey of transforming himself and an industrial age organization from a knowledge-hoarding organization into a knowledge-sharing enterprise.

They retraced the steps taken, lessons learned and how the role of the corporate librarian changed from managing periodicals and subscriptions to proactively brokering critical knowledge across different segments of the enterprise.

They looked at the importance of business process modeling, how goals and objectives brought clarity and focus regarding what knowledge was essential, and avoided wasting effort on trying to capture non-essential knowledge. They describe the tools used, including data management and visualization, white boarding and collaborative decision making.

Announcements

Ruth Wolfish, Chapter Cabinet Chair reported on the Mid Year Survey, which was sent to all SLA Chapters during mid-May; of the 56 chapters, 27 (48%) responded. Chapter Cabinet Report
Toni Carbo, co-chair of the Information Ethics Advisory Council reported on the Guidelines drafted. Information Ethics Advisory Council Report
James King provided an update on the work done on the Chapters’ map, which will indicate which states belong to the chapters.
Tips to chapter leadership: outreach to student groups; make it advantageous for people to join SLA; pass leadership messages onto members.
Information will be available soon on software that will be available for the chapters to use. Technical support will be provided 24/7 with increased server space at a reasonable price.
All are encouraged to attend the monthly webinars. Vendor/Unit relations webinar to be held July 29th.
As the first SLA Chapter to be formed, the Boston Chapter will celebrate its centennial in October.

First Five Years Advisory Council report (Gayle Gossen)

Treasurer’s report (Dan Trefethen)
· SLA staff is still operating at a reduction (from pre-2009 levels) of about 30%.
· All chains of sponsorship are down.
· Short-term cash flow issues during 2009-2010 were managed by taking a loan.

Membership report (Paula Diaz)
· Many kinds of membership reports are available to chapter and division membership chairs; custom reports can be run as requested. Membership chairs should see www.sla.org/ulas

Peter Morville’s earlier book Ambient Findability explored most of the problems we encounter in searching for information and gave illustrations of some of the things scientists and information or knowledge managers were working on to help. [see my review here: http://units.sla.org/chapter/cpnw/interface/2006/spring/news.html ] It was an exciting book to read back in 2005.

With that background, I felt I just had to see this new Morville book, Search Patterns. It is really an overview of the field of Internet search engines, written with designers of search engine sites in mind who design the pages and the programs that help information specialists and searchers find things or information, particularly those things that would appear on the Internet that could be found if the right way or search mechanism were found that indeed found what we needed. It would probably make a good course outline for beginner search designers and faculty teaching search strategies and search literacy.

In the first section, the authors review what we are engaged in currently when we search. We are shown some of the pages we might see (of course those illustrations are so small it is hard to get an idea of what is going on within the web page without a magnifying glass.) These illustrations cover the named design processes called Incremental construction, Progressive disclosure, Immediate response, Alternate views, Predictability, Recognition over recall, Minimal disruption, Direct manipulation and Context of use. We are then presented with the “design patterns” or constructions of the search engines such as Auto-complete, Best First, Federated Search, Faceted Navigation, Advanced search, Personalization, Pagination, Structured Results, Actionable result, and Unified discovery. These search processes/constructs and discussion will help information professionals understand why there is a need to understand exactly what these various engines can and can’t do as they do searching for clients. The authors insist on using the term “faceted navigation” and boldly say, “After all interaction with facets are (sic) the closest we come to the reference interview and what Google cofounder Sergey Brin calls the ultimate personalized search engine; the librarian.” “Faceted Navigation” brings to my mind from the illustrations nothing more than what most people understand as a Portal. It also confuses me because of my understanding of “faceted classification” used early with punched cards and hard copy files being shelved in doctor’s offices, or Sear’s customer orders being filed/shelved by phone number digits.

Again for the designers there are suggestions which need to be kept in mind while they do what they do; find ways for us to search which result in good hits. These are the “Engines of Discovery” including Category, Topic, Format, Audience Platform, and Mode. Drill down and perhaps one will find a “record.”

While Search Patterns is a review of things that go into search, and where we are now with regard to web page search pages, later in the book, without warning, the reader is treated to a couple of scenarios suggesting where we might be in the future. These Sci-Fi scenarios suggest where search processes might take us; mainly to immediate sales, using our mobile computer/phone for food, or tickets, or clothing, and finding locations, with little if any thought to our struggle with answers to the business or concept questions. In other words a scenario where we use digital information for what we do now with voice calls, directory lookups, asking someone on the street just to get around. Hmm…maybe we’ll not be able to get lost and no longer serendipitously find something unusual or interesting, as my wife and I did often while in Europe walking around cities being lost.

The authors have pieced together some philosophy citing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (calling it only the “Whorf hypothesis”) of linguistic relativity which basically observes; how we ask the question determines what answers we find. They also talk about “myth” as being our stories that create the future. From that the authors then jump to the conclusion; future is built by what we search and find. Thus; search results influence our behavior and creates our future.

While this is a very good overview of search, my disappointment is there is little discussion of the research learning how people actually do their searching; what was found out. When I read the title, my thought was this is a book about how people search. Well it isn’t. It’s about how search engines presents results from our queries. The only direct information I found relating to usage was an undocumented statement, “on average, people use and learn only from the top three hits on the first search results page.” If indeed that is true, then surely all of our college students who write papers will be using the same information with nothing new being discovered; thus freezing our future here and now. Certainly knowing more about how people do search, how they construct their inquiry, vocabulary used, search results used, et al, could have been much more helpful for both designers and librarians or information specialists and Knowledge Managers. Of course, this is the problem also with search; the meaning of words or phrases like “Search Patterns.” Suzanne Langer in her 1950s book, Philosophy in a new key, explains like Sabir-Whorf; if one asks, “Does God exist?” one also has to define what one means by God or “What is God?” which of itself suggests God exists and might be definable.

Although discussed in the previous book Ambient Findability, there is little discussion, although recognition of the problem, for the designers finding ways to avoid the problems of distinguishing between such things as “violin parts,” the music, and “violin parts,” the repair parts, or between things and places with the same name. Searchers are now helped by such things as “autocomplete” and automatic suggestions incorporated into the search engines.

Because the graphic examples are so tiny and difficult to read in color, the authors have given readers a code and URL to use to go online to see the actual book digitally so as to search the embedded links. They also include other links which are not in the book. While it would be good to go on-line and review all the examples against the book’s content, I for one don’t read books on the computer; and feel having to do so would defeat the purpose of publishing a printed book in the first place.

“I am doing a great job in gathering and analyzing market intelligence for my employer. Why is my position being eliminated?” It is being eliminated because doing a good job simply isn’t good enough for what many see as an overhead and therefore expendable position. “We can just Google it ourselves. Why do we need a market intelligence specialist?” say the C-level Execs.

The solution is that the market professionals must put some of their skills to work internally as well as externally. Market intelligence professionals need to know what motivates the C-Level Execs he or she support. Perceptions aren’t just important; they are reality for C-Level Execs. The market intelligence professional must understand and come to terms with this reality. In this way the customer, organization, management and market intelligence professionals themselves will be best served.

Hello from the student chapter of SLA! We have had an exciting and busy school year and wanted to share with you what we have been up to.

We kicked off our year by welcoming the new students to UW and introducing them to SLA. We hosted an open meeting immediately following a required course for all incoming students. With a roomful of interested people, David Tolmie showed off the SLA, SLA-PNW, and SLA@UW websites. We discussed the many benefits of joining SLA, subscribing to our listserv, and we awarded free memberships. Following the meeting, SLA@UW bought a few pitchers at local pub. It was a great opportunity to introduce SLA to new students and have fun.

Every quarter we host a library crawl, touring different special libraries in the area. Students are welcome to join in at any leg of the tour as we travel through different neighborhoods. We have had two great library crawls this school year. During the fall, we ventured into Capitol Hill. We toured the Group Health Library, the Hugo House Zine Archives, and the Museum of Mysteries Libraries and concluded at a local bar for drinks. Most recently, we visited Special Libraries on campus. We were welcomed at the Miller Horticultural Library, the Engineering Library, and Media Center at Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Everyone had a great time. We were introduced to different types of collections, information organization, and great people at each location.

We are looking forward to many more fun events this year, especially Student Night! See you soon!

DUTIES:

Summary Description
As a member of the Technical Services Team, participates in library electronic resource workflow including acquisition, licensing, activation, and trouble-shooting. Key Responsibilities:
Participates in electronic resources workflow to ensure consistent and integrated access. Working in a collaborative environment, creates, manages, and maintains resource, license, and contact records; develops and implements III electronic resource management system (ERM).Has a lead role in providing public access to electronic resources including e-journals, e-databases, and e-books. Monitors and troubleshoots access and content related issues with aggregators, vendors, and publishers related to various library portals such as the library catalog, the A-Z list of databases, the A-Z list of e-journals and the OpenURL resolver.Manages electronic resource access with our knowledge base vendor (Serials Solutions). Updates and creates new connections for the Serials Solutions link resolver (Article Linker), and federated search (One Search). Inputs data into the Serials Solutions client center and maintains accuracy of holdings data.Administers new and existing licenses for electronic resources. Reviews site licenses and agreements and tracks progress of licenses to point of activation. Ensures that files of record are kept for UCL electronic resource licenses. Maintains ERM tracking for electronic resource licenses and licensing expressions. Works closely with the University Counsel to resolve license and contract issues.Obtains and manages statistics, including assisting in obtaining and managing usage data, collection statistics, and working with Web Team for continuous enhancement of user access paths. Serves as a resource for selectors using online collection development tools including identification of new technologies, expertise in publisher and vendor websites, and training in collection management tools such as the library catalog or GOBI.Participates as necessary in appropriate committees and organizations related to the duties and responsibilities of the Department, and in support of UC Libraries programs and organizations.

Qualifications:
Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program; experience with an integrated library system in an academic library; proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing programs; ability to work independently and effectively across organization lines and in collaboration with a variety of individuals and groups; aptitude for detail oriented work, including strong analytic and problem solving skills; demonstrated organization, analytical and problem solving skills; demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals

Volunteer opportunity!

The Center School, a Seattle public high school at Seattle Center that focuses on the arts and community engagement, augments its programs through partnerships with many community organizations such as the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Seattle International Film Festival. A volunteer parent needs a database that will assist her in tracking information about the community organizations and the activities involved in each interaction. This application would increase the value of the relationships among the schools and the community arts organizations, and would provide the students with greater opportunity to expand their own talents through exposure to the many types of creativity found in the Seattle arts community.

The application is needed before the start of the school year in September of 2009.

Follow-on development
It would be desirable to provide for a “Wish List” capability that would record specific requests from the teachers and bump them against the organizations contained in this database. This would be a secondary requirement.

A new resource: Northwest Central, the continuing education network for library staff in the Pacific Northwest.

Northwest Central is a community-driven online clearinghouse for library continuing education and collaboration serving library staff in Oregon, Washington, and beyond. The project was developed in 2005 by the PORTALS (Portland Area Library System) consortium with LSTA funding from the Oregon State Library. In June 2006 the pilot site was launched, and in November 2008, a redesign of the site by Insite Web Publishing was released. Portland Community College Library provides hosting and administrative support for Northwest Central.

As a free, community-driven project, Northwest Central depends upon members of the library community to share their resources, ideas, and calendar listings. Northwest Central invites you to join their community of life-long library learners.

News from SLA Division Cabinet Chair

At the SLA Annual Conference, the SLA members interested in creating a new SLA Taxonomy Division gained approval to circulate a petition to identify members for the proposed division, which will focus on ways to organize and structure information so that content is accessible and useful.

The proposed Taxonomy Division would offer a practical context for exploring issues and sharing experiences related to planning, creating, maintaining and using taxonomies, thesauri, authority files, and other controlled vocabularies and information structures.

SLA PNW Chapter President's Message

Greetings all,

I just returned from the 2009 SLA Annual Conference in Washington, DC! What better time to attend than during SLA's Centennial Celebration! For me the highlights were the Opening Session with former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell discussing his views on leadership and the importance of information technology; the receptions and other networking events; the Centennial Leadership Celebration at the Library of Congress; and the Closing Session with Judy Woodruff moderating a panel discussion on the state of information gathering.

At the Joint Chapter and Division meeting, the Chapter Cabinet Chair related that many chapter programs are focusing on topics to help members during this economic downturn. Despite the economy, SLA membership has increased with the strong interest from our international members. In fact, there were over 30 countries represented by SLA attendees. But membership retention rate is only 70%. SLA Headquarters indicated that they will be disseminating membership reports soon. Please note that due to the low level of interest, the Communities of Practice sites will be going away by December 31, 2009. Other news includes the creation of the new Academic Division and discussions on forming a Taxonomy Division.

The major topic of discussion at the Closing Session/Membership Meeting was SLA’s Alignment research. What can be expected? A name change for SLA that will better reflect the value we add to our organizations, especially to people outside of our profession. Other announcements included SLA’s new video channel SLA-TV, and the Beta version of the new Alignment Information Portal.

Also reported was the trend of chapters using blogs instead of newsletters to keep members up-to-date. Kudos to our web master Andy Szydlowski for setting up the SLA PNW’s Blog site! This is our space to actively share news and stay connected.

crowd, including UW students and faculty, along with a wide array of information professionals from the Seattle area. Tables were stocked with fine cuisine and a healthy supply of beverages. There was never a lull in conversation as the room was filled with the clamoring of enthusiastic voices from people mingling and sharing information.

The event’s main attraction was led by Medical Librarian, Michelle Goodwin, Nick Berry Content Architect & Taxonomist from REI, and Traci Timmons, Head Librarian at The Seattle Art Museum. The presenters spoke with candor regarding the challenges libraries and businesses are experiencing due to the current economic crisis. The insight and knowledge of how information professionals are coping with these challenges generated a lively Q & A discussion, leaving students that are soon to enter the job market with a more sound understanding of what’s to come! Overall, the evening was a resounding achievement and could not have happened without the guidance and leadership from the student chapter’s adviser, Nancy Gershenfeld and the diligent efforts of this year’s student officers! SLA UW thanks the PNW chapter for their support and contributions to making this year’s student night one to remember.

Our congratulations to the UW Chapter and in particular the Technology Officer, Kristen Dietiker, for the well earned recognition. This award recognizes the UW SLA Chapter for its use of various resources for outreach and communication, including the web presence, RSS, Twitter, Facebook and Google sites.
